He is most known for The Epic of Gilgamesh (c. 2150–1400 BCE), a magnificent Babylonian poem that was written 1500 years before Homer and is therefore considered the oldest work of epic literature in the world. Although Gilgamesh appears in a number of Sumerian poems, the epic is where he is most famous. Inscriptions that attribute Gilgamesh's construction of the great walls of Uruk (present-day Warka, Iraq) to him provide historical support for his existence. These tablets are also where he initially documents his search for the meaning of life in the story. Additionally, he is mentioned by well-known historical figures of his era, including King Enmebaragesi of Kish (c. 2700 BCE), and he is mentioned in the Sumerian King List (c. 2100 BCE).
